Try This!

Use electric tape or duct tape in multiple colors to decorate the outside of your flashlight.

PAPER CLIP

SWITCH

Switches allow you to control the flow of electricity. Here’s an easy way to add one to your simple circuit.

TOOL KIT

°simple, closed circuit

°large paper clip

°cardboard

°2 pushpins

°science journal

Cut through one of the foil strips from your simple circuit, halfway between the battery and the bulb. Open the paper clip, leaving a loop at each end. You should now have two pieces of foil about 6 inches long.

Place one end of the cut foil strip on the cardboard. Stick a pushpin through one loop of the paper clip, through the foil, and into the cardboard. Some of the metal should be showing and the paper clip should be able to move.

Using the other pushpin, attach the other foil strip to the other end of the cardboard. It should be close enough so that the paper clip reaches the other pushpin. The paper clip should be able to swing between the two pushpins.

Try your switch! Swing the paper clip to touch the metal part of the second pushpin. Is your light glowing? If not, make sure the foil strips haven’t come loose from the light or battery.
